It’s the New Mexico state flower

It’s enjoying small scale farming because its spikes and roots have medicinal anti-inflammatory properties, and roots are very nutritious and palatable. It’s not uncommonly seen in supermarket produce sections.

In the SW United States It is a good plant for street medians, xeriscape and succulent gardens and can also be grown in a large container.

The plant is known from the Great Basin, the Mojave Sonoran, and Chihuahuan Deserts, in the states of UT, CA, NV, AZ, CO, NM, and TX in the United States, and the state of  Chihuahua in Mexico. It can be found in several habitat types, including Pinyon Juniper, Sagebrush, and Ponderosa pine colonies at elevations generally between 1,500 and 2,500 meters.

It is associated with Yucca schidiegera, yucca brevifolia, Yucca arizonica, Yucca faxoniana, Agave utahensis and other Agave species. It can be found among Sclerocactus, Pediocactus, Navajoa and Toumeva species.

Yucca baccata occurs in a large area of the North American deserts and exhibits much variation across its range. Yucca baccata specimens from the higher, mountainous regions of the Rocky Mountains is winter-hardy and tolerates extreme conditions

Regrettably, it’s seeds are a chore to clean out of it’s fruits, by far the most challenging of all the yuccas. an average fruit contains around 100 seeds, that must be cut open with a sharp knife and scooped out with a small spoon, then latter cleaned of additional inert matter and sterile white seeds.

Seeds: 35 count/$4.99, 100/$9.49, about 1,000/$74.49,

About 1,000 seeds = 75 grams, so they’re sold by weight not count in units of 1,000 or more.
